Hollywood stars Japanese adverts

I found an excellent TV commercial of Michael Jackson selling Suzuki scooters in Japan in the 1980`s with typically Japanese skewed slogan - Love is my message.

They`re still going on as I`m sure you`re aware. Hollywood star gets paid big bucks to do cheesy ad for adoring Japanese public safe in the knowledge that it`s so far away from their homeland to do any damage to their reputation as a serious artist.

Thus we have Meg Ryan peddling Nescafe coffee although the only thing that is “Perfect” about the slurry they pass off as coffee is the size of the cheque they were willing to pay her as well as Brad Pitt selling us Edwin trousers and Carlsberg beer and even English starlet, Keira Knightley, promoting Lux shampoo.

Naturally being isolated in Japan, I`m unable to tell if these stars are doing the same thing in their own country or not. This is where you dear reader come in.

      Trust me, they’re not…….

Some female stars do ads for cosmetic companies. Andy Mc
dowell and heather Locklear for L’Oreal (I think ) and Susan Sarandon does one for Revlon. Since stars don’t scrub floors they only do the glamour stuff. Michael Jordan does one for Hanes with Kevin Bacon and you can sometimes make out a famous voice doing voice overs.

Of course they don’t. Can you imagine Posh and Becks doing those ridiculous TBC ads back in the UK?

I would say that the number is on the decline though. When I was here in the early 90s, there were tons of stars in ads, but you dont see that many now. And we must give credit to Tom Cruise for not falling for the lure of easy yen.
