When I lived in the Netherlands I only understood about 30% of that chatter and that was perfectly fine as I was able to keep it out of my brain that way. When I moved to an English speaking country again (after seven years of 'abstinence') and was able to listen in again I was shocked at how stupid people sounded. This might sound arrogant but only very few conversations in those environments are at all worth listening to. I think part of the problem is that I have lived abroad for such a long time (16 years!) and that changes the perception of life quite a lot.
