I don`t watch much TV here in Japan. You may think that this is commendable but it is very easy. You see, Japanese TV is awful and bizarre.

I came across the excellent TV in Japan blog which showcases shorts from Japanese TV and I think you`ll share my perspective.

As explained by TV in Japan

Something involving a chubby semi-naked man with lots of oil torturing another semi-naked man all for the enjoyment of a live audience. Who all seem to think this is the funniest thing they’ve ever seen.

Prepare yourself for a moment. And then watch this.

Oh, god, that’s fucking great… Especially when he pulls the plastic over his head and starts slapping him! I wish American TV was half as funny as this.

I’m with you. And it hurts my heart as someone who loves tv. I can force myself to watch sometimes for the language study alone, but other than that, sumo, and the food/travel shows, I find it all just beyond me. Maybe after I’ve been here for a few more years…

I’m sure not ALL japanese TV programmes are like this. I am sure that there are very good programmes, too, esp. on NHK. You should see more positive sides of japan….

I suspect it might be that you don’t speak Japanese as well as the rest of Japan so you don’t enjoy their TV as much. Without the puns, play on words, verbal humor, etc TV with just motion isn’t funny. When I came to the State I thought Sasame Street was the dumbest show for kids, and nightly sitcoms were the dumbest things I had ever seen. A bunch of people standing around making faces with sound tracks of people laughing. Now 25 years when I can speak the language, I think some sitcoms are great.

I still don’t enjoy British comedies or movies–mostly because i can’t understand that they are saying in them…
