Kids riding in the front seat with no seatbelt hanging out the window

I’m amazed at the amount of times I’ve seen children sitting in the front seats of cars without any form of restraint on.
The other day I saw a baby of no more than 3 months resting on the knees of the mother who was driving. A few hours later a car passed me with a kid standing in the front seat with his head out of a half open window like a dog being driven to the park.
This is truly unbelievable. I hope that the parents reconsider their actions before their children’s face hits the windscreen at 60 miles an hour.

Yeah, I’ve found that unbelievable ever since I came to Japan too. Just the other day, I saw a grandad driving his kei-truck with one arm while holding his 2-yo grandson in the other! Absolutely stupid. Anyway, I’m going to start taking photos of people I see doing this and giving them to the police. Hopefuly, they’ll chase them up and teach these imbeciles a lesson!

I was surprised that the concept of a parking lane does not exist in larger cities like Kyoto. Instead, cars stop in the 18 inch wide bicycle lane and leave the rest of their vehicle in traffic. This means that other drivers must pass into oncoming traffic to get by sometimes. I haven’t witnessed any accidents yet, but I’ve only been here two weeks. As for kids without car restraints, it’s just not worth the risk, and I’m glad to see that Japan has “mandatory” car seat laws.
