This is Kuidaore Ningyou, a large doll in front of the Kuidaore restaurant in Shinsaibashi. It`s one of the symbols of Osaka along with Tsutenkaku and Osaka Castle.

Thanks to the World Cup it`s been kitted out in full Japan gear in support of the Japanese team.

Japan unfortunately lost to Australia in their first match 3-1 with Australia`s three goals coming in the last six minutes. They play Croatia today.

Come on Japan!

I’ve always wondered who that character was. Osaka means takoyaki, Osaka Castle, the so-creepy-it’s-cool Tower of the Sun, and Kuidaore Ningyou.

And gah! Japan v. Croatia was a stalemate. Come on, the Japan!

I’ve never seen this particular character before. Then again, I haven’t had much chance to schlep around Osaka in recent years. I’ll definitely look for him the next time I’m in town!

Why does Japan gear look so stars-and-stripesy?
