Found this in the Japan Times but could only get this online via news24.com. A chimpanzee in Beijing has recently given up on a 16 year nicotine habit.

From the Japan Times article:

The chimpanzee began smoking in 1989 after her first mate died. Following the deaths of her second mate in 1997 and the transfer of another offspring to a different zoo, she began to smoke more heavily

I`m an ex-smoker and know the evils of the weed but you know, she is a chimpanzee - it`s not as if she can go to the local newsagents and buy a lighter and 20 Marlboro Reds. Just take them away from her! Don`t give her a lighter!
