I have recently started seriously studying kanji today. Not the 25 stroke labyrinthesque nightmares but easy and relatively useless kanji like mountain, fire and hill.

The thing is the book I am using to study from (Kanji Starter doesn`t give me the directions and order of the strokes. In England when we were younger we had the magic pencil on TV to teach us how to form the letters - “top to bottom and flick” for L for example (This could well be a figment of my messed up mind. Anyone care to back me up on this?)

In English if you write a “t” you do the down stroke and then the cross but for all Japanese characters the horizontal stroke must always come first. I have had eight year old Japanese monsters admonish me for failing to do this.

Another failing with this book is that when I copy the kanji perfectly from it and show them to Reiko or her father they say it is wrong. Now I don`t know who to trust in this situation - A book written by a Japanese person for publication to a mass audience or my girlfriend. My heart says my girfriend but in my opinion the kanji in the book are cleaner and more beautiful. Yama (the kanji at the top) for example which means mountain and looks similar to a W has three straight lines in the book but Reiko and her father both independently wrote them with the third vertical stroke slightly askew. This looks to my novice eyes incorrect but is obviously right. What do I do? Perhaps just buy a better book?
